  1. Record-breaking Auction Prices

In recent diamonds auctions, record-breaking prices have been reached, showcasing the enduring appeal and value of these precious gems. From rare colored diamonds to flawless white diamonds, collectors and investors are actively bidding for these exquisite stones, pushing prices to unprecedented heights. Two record-setting precious stones led nine auctions that collectively realized $144 million in the auction house’s most valuable Luxury Week ever presented in New York City.

  1. New Diamond Discoveries

The exploration and mining industry continues to unveil new diamond discoveries. Whether it’s the unearthing of large gem-quality diamonds or the discovery of new diamond deposits, these findings contribute to the overall supply of diamonds and bring fresh excitement to the market.

Lucara Diamond Corp. has announced a discovery that will be etched into natural diamond history. A gorgeous natural diamond weighing 1,080.10 carats was discovered at their Karowe mine located in Botswana. Its massive size puts it at approximately the seventh-largest diamond ever discovered and the top five largest colorless diamonds ever discovered. The Karowe mine in Botswana is legendary for producing some of the largest diamond finds of all time. In fact, roughly half of the ten largest diamonds ever discovered have been found at Karowe.

  1. Sustainable Diamond Mining Practices

Environmentally conscious diamond mining practices are gaining momentum. Diamond mining companies are actively taking steps to minimize their ecological footprint, ensuring responsible sourcing and adherence to ethical labor practices. These initiatives aim to protect the environment and improve the livelihood of communities associated with diamond mining.

From large-scale diamond mining companies, like the members of the Natural Diamond Council, to independent diamond retailers and designer brands, everyone plays a role in ensuring the entire diamond value chain is upholding the highest standards, from the people whose lives we touch to the environment in which we operate.

Did You Know? 85% of the world’s natural diamonds by volume and 95% by value are extracted and marketed by large scale mining companies, located in geographically diverse locations, including Canada, and Botswana. These ethical diamond companies operate with a high level of transparency and take responsibility for their societal and environmental impact, published in audited sustainability reports.

Every purchase of a natural diamond supports an ethical diamond industry that values responsible and transparent business practices, while helping local communities to generate long-term sustainable development and a lasting positive legacy.

  1. Innovations in Diamond Cutting and Design

Cutting techniques and diamond design are constantly evolving to showcase the brilliance and uniqueness of each stone. Advancements in technology have paved the way for precision cutting, resulting in breathtakingly beautiful diamonds. From fancy cuts to intricate designs, diamond artisans are pushing creative boundaries, offering a diverse range of styles for every taste.

  1. Lab-Grown Diamonds Revolution

The growing popularity of lab-grown diamonds is transforming the diamond industry. These diamonds, created in a controlled laboratory environment, offer a sustainable and more affordable alternative to naturally mined diamonds. With advancements in technology, lab-grown diamonds now possess exceptional quality and brilliance, making them a desirable choice for eco-conscious consumers.

As an industry, we are experiencing a revolution and I don’t say this lightly. Approximately 10 years ago I heard a rumor about the increasing quality achieved by producers of lab-grown diamonds. Previously, these stones were very low-grade and only used for industrial purposes.
Around five years ago, I was asked to source a lab–grown diamond for a customer. Initially, as a traditional fine jeweller who worked with natural diamonds and gemstones, I was very skeptical. I didn’t believe this product would be something I wanted to associate with. However, after a little research, I found an extremely good source for lab-grown diamonds that were not only of very impressive quality, but they were also highly affordable.
Now, five years on, we are seeing huge growth in the lab-grown diamond industry. I would estimate that 50% of the diamonds I am asked to source for customers are lab-grown.
